Great Britain - Rattled through driving test almost 60 times

Tried 59 times, 59 times nothing happened: Only on the 60th attempt did a learner in England pass the theory driving test. The learner driver in the town of Redditch near Birmingham had to pay a total of 1380 pounds (1608 euros) in fees - a theory test costs 23 pounds.

"There's no doubt it's a difficult test," the AA's head of driving schools, Camilla Benitez, told the BBC. "It's quite easy to underestimate the theory test." At the same time, she praised the test taker's commitment as amazing. Only once the theory has been passed are novice drivers in England allowed behind the wheel for practical lessons.

As in Germany, the test consists of 50 questions, each with several possible answers. At least 43 correct answers are required to pass. This is followed by a video test in which the potential danger must be recognized in 14 traffic situations.

According to the British Department for Transport, only 44 percent of learner drivers passed the theory test at the first attempt. Fifteen years ago, the figure was 65 percent. The 59 unsuccessful attempts by the novice driver, whose age and gender were not disclosed, are a record for the first half of 2023, as the BBC reported on Monday.

However, the "lead" over others is only small. One candidate in the city of Hull failed 57 times, one in Guildford 55 times and another in Tunbridge Wells 53 times. However, this is still far behind the record set in 2012, when a learner driver failed 92 times.
