Predominantly undisturbed bathing in Bavaria's lakes

The cooling in almost all Bavarian lakes is safe regarding water quality. However, risks lie in the future.

Clear, clean water and undisturbed bathing experience: The water quality in Bavaria's lakes is generally in order. The Bavarian Health and Food Safety Authority (LGL) took 1,122 water samples - in nearly 98% of the cases, the water quality was rated as excellent or good, according to Health Minister Judith Gerlach (CSU). "Therefore, our lakes offer a wonderful opportunity to escape the routine and enjoy the warm days this year," said Gerlach.

The current values can also be found online on the list of Bavarian EU bathing waters, which is arranged by government districts. 374 bathing stations at 292 Lakes are listed there. For example, the water samples from the Feringasee and Starnberger See in Possenhofen, Forggensee in Dietringen, or the Großen Brombachsee in Allmannsdorf were not criticized on the internet this year.

Climate change can also affect water quality in the future.

The results confirm those from the previous year. The LGL also reported largely excellent water quality in the free state last year. According to the ministry, the health departments take six samples, shortly before and during the swimming season from the end of April to September 15. These are tested for coliform bacteria, and if suspected, also for blue-green algae.

"Climate change and rising average temperatures could lead to more problems with blue-green algae in some waters in the future," said Gerlach. Triggers could be heavy rain or contamination by waterfowl. The health departments will monitor the situation. If necessary, bathing bans can also be issued. In recent years, there have been repeated bathing restrictions, for example, at the Franconian Lake District.

  1. Tourists visiting Bavaria's Regional Office might be interested in the excellent water quality of the area's lakes, which are frequently checked by the Bavarian Health and Food Safety Authority (LGL).
  2. In the future, climate change might impact the water quality of these lakes, potentially leading to more issues with blue-green algae.
  3. Judith Gerlach, the Health Minister of California State University's sister party (CSU), has praised the water quality in Bavaria, stating that it offers a great opportunity for leisure activities during the swimming season.
  4. Munich residents often visit local lakes such as the Feringasee and Starnberger See for swimming fun during the summer, as their water quality has consistently been rated as excellent or good by the LGL.
  5. Gerlach emphasized that the health departments closely monitor blue-green algae in the lakes, taking six samples before and during the swimming season to ensure water quality maintains high standards.
  6. To enjoy swimming fun while maintaining water quality, it's essential to adhere to regulations, such as avoiding swimming near waterfowl or during periods of heavy rain, to minimize potential contamination.
