Baltic Sea Island - Power outage on Usedom - Thousands affected
A large power outage caused problems in the Kaiserbaden area on the island of Usedom for approximately twelve hours - in apartments, hotels, and supermarkets. In the early morning, an underground cable fault occurred in the energy supplier Edison's network in the area of Bansin, according to their statement. As a result, the power supply in the region around the Kaiserbaden in Bansin, Ahlbeck, and Heringsdorf was disconnected. Power was restored again only twelve hours later.
Food had to be discarded
"It was an exceptional situation," said the mayor of Heringsdorf, Laura Isabelle Marisken, in the evening. Thousands of households were affected. "You couldn't fill up with gas, the traffic lights didn't work, and in some hotels, the doors of the underground garages wouldn't open anymore," explained Marisken. Chilled food from supermarkets had to be discarded.
For people who needed electricity for medical reasons, a crisis center was set up at the fire department's rescue station. Some people had visited. There was an emergency power supply there. The technical leadership of the disaster control was also present to support on site.
Hotel-Juniorchef: "It's dramatic"
The power outage in the middle of the tourist season on the island caused various disruptions in hotels. Lisa Wehrmann, Junior Hotelchef of the Ostseeblick Hotel in Heringsdorf, reported to the "Nordkurier": It was not possible to make coffee, baking bread was also not possible. Room cleaning, lunch: Everything was affected by the power outage. Check-outs were also affected: "There are currently no check-outs possible because the cash registers and hotel systems were disabled by the power outage. It's dramatic, all we have left is a good mood to spread," said Wehrmann to the newspaper.
No connection to power outage in Ueckermünde
Already on Tuesday afternoon, there had been power outages in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern - in the regions of Eggesin, Ueckermünde, and Friedland. According to statements from the network operator Edis, the cause was maintenance work, during which a power pole had toppled over. Power was restored to the last affected households only after more than four hours. The reason why the pole fell over is still unclear. There is no connection to the power outage on Usedom.
The power outage also affected the town of Ahlbeck on the Baltic Sea Island of Usedom, leading to inconvenience for both locals and tourists.
The blackout forced the closure of several restaurants in Herringdorf, known for its famous herring dish, causing food waste.
The power outage highlighted the reliance on electricity, as residents in Herringdorf struggled without functioning traffic lights and some hotels experiencing issues with their underground garage doors.
Despite the challenges, the local tourism industry showed resilience, with the Junior Hotelchef at Oceanview Hotel in Heringsdorf maintaining a positive attitude, focusing on spreading good mood despite the power outage disruptions.
