Sufficient rainfall is important for the landscape, so that the plants don't dry out. But this year it was a bit too much of a good thing, as the potato harvest shows.

Potato harvest - Potatoes expensive - Rain causes failures in some places

Consumers in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) should prepare for higher prices for Potatoes this year. Due to the rainfall in the past months, the potato planting was partially significantly delayed, as some farmlands were not accessible, according to the Agricultural Chamber in Münster.

Furthermore, the vegetation development was then influenced by continuous rainfall. "This has led to significant problems with early blight in the region," there were occasional total failures due to the fungus disease. However, there are also healthy stands that developed well.

Harvest is still running for two months

The harvest started in mid-May, and it is expected to last until mid-September. According to the Landesstatistikamt IT.NRW, potato prices rose by 13% in June. The Agricultural Chamber justified this with the challenging growing conditions and increased demand from the industry, which uses potatoes for example for fries. Market observers assume that potato prices could further increase in the further summer months due to the tighter supply.

The excess rainfall in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) negatively impacted potato planting, making some farmlands inaccessible.Münster translates to Munster in English, and the Agricultural Chamber in this city reported partial delays in potato planting due to rainfall.Despite these challenges, continuous rainfall also impacted the vegetation development, leading to issues with early blight in some regions, resulting in total failures for some potato crops.Despite the issues, the harvest for potatoes in NRW is expected to continue for two more months, with potato prices having already risen by 13% in June, potentially increasing further due to tighter supply during the summer months.
