CDU Politician Adeline Abimnwi Awemo was racially insulted and attacked while hanging election posters in Cottbus. A 29-year-old woman is being investigated by the police for incitement and bodily harm. Awemo, who is running for the state election in September, was insulted by the woman on a Thursday evening. The politician was also lightly injured during the incident.

"It is currently assumed that the attack was motivated by racist reasons," the police stated. The CDU politician, who holds German citizenship, was born in Cameroon. The state chairman of the party, Jan Redmann, expressed shock and said: "The increasing risk for people who engage politically in our country is unacceptable."

Politician in hospital for examination

According to the police, Awemo and her family members had been hanging election posters in the city of Cottbus around 8:30 pm. Awemo was approached by a stranger without provocation and subjected to insults. Then she was physically assaulted. "There was a physical altercation," a police spokesperson said. Awemo was hit on the neck. She was taken to the hospital for examination by the rescue services, which she left after being treated ambulantly.

The State Protection Agency took over the investigation against the 29-year-old suspect. The woman was previously unknown to the police for such offenses as incitement. The police carried out a so-called threat assessment interview. "In this, she was informed of the legal consequences of possible further offenses." The injured party also reported the suspect for bodily harm.

According to a statement from the state CDU, Awemo said: "I have respect for people, no fear. I went into politics to work with people and make a difference. I am a Cottbus resident and will remain a Cottbus resident, engaged for the people here."

Awemo sits on the Cottbus city council for integration and migration. In the state election on September 22, she is running as the CDU's direct candidate against AfD state representative Lars Schieske in the Cottbus-South constituency. The police spokesperson said: "We will ensure that such incidents do not recur over the injured party."

The CDU state chairman Redmann announced that he would travel to Cottbus today to support Awemo in her campaign. "We will not be intimidated," he said. "Those who fuel polarization in our society and contribute to the growing degradation are responsible for this act."
