Crime - Police stop truck driver with nail chain
During an hour-long chase on the highway 4, the Cologne police stopped a truck with a chain of nails thrown onto the road. After the tires burst, the 38-year-old at the wheel drove on for about ten kilometers on the rims. "Then nothing worked anymore," said a police spokesman on Saturday morning. The Belgian was taken out of the cab and provisionally arrested. The WDR had previously reported.
According to the Cologne police, the pursuit began on Friday evening in Belgium. The driver accelerated there when he was to be checked. He then drove into the Netherlands, where he rammed into two military police vehicles, which blocked his way. No one was injured.
According to the police, the 38-year-old then crossed the border into Germany near Aachen, where he continued his escape via the A4. After around 60 kilometers, officers threw out the spike chain near Frechen to stop the driver.
Before the Heumar interchange, the officers finally succeeded in catching the driver. He allowed himself to be arrested without resistance, said the police spokesman. The officers were initially unable to provide any information about the motive. The 38-year-old appeared confused, said the spokesman. He is now to be extradited to the Netherlands. Following the ramming of the police car, the man is being investigated there for attempted murder.
During the escape journey, the lorry had also lost some cleaning agent. The A4 was temporarily closed during the night to clear the road.
