Berlin - Police operation due to mass brawl at school in Neukölln
Pupils, teachers and police officers have been injured in a major brawl at a school in Berlin-Neukölln. The 52-year-old principal, who tried to break up the brawling youths, was pushed on Monday morning and broke a finger, police said on Tuesday. Other teachers and police officers were also attacked.
Pupils sprayed pepper spray, so that a total of 49 children, young people and teachers suffered irritation and were treated by paramedics. According to the police, the reason for the escalated conflict was rather banal and not about politics.
The community school in the Neukölln district of Gropiusstadt, which in Berlin runs from Year 1 to Year 10, convened a crisis team and called in school psychologists. The school supervisory authority was also informed, according to a spokesperson for the education administration. "We remain in contact to ensure the best possible support for the school."
Police deployed with several patrol cars
At around 10.30 a.m., a fight broke out at the school between two 14-year-olds and a 15-year-old pupil on one side and two other boys on the other. One pupil sprayed irritant gas, but ran into the gas cloud himself, an opponent got hold of the spray and attacked the other group with it. Another 15-year-old joined in and the brawl escalated.
Two teachers who intervened were also sprayed. The principal was so injured that she was later taken to hospital. At first it was only said that she had suffered a fracture to her hand, but later it was reported that she had accidentally fallen against a wall and broken her finger.
The police were alerted, several patrol cars arrived and the officers calmed the situation somewhat. However, the 21-year-old brother of one of the students then arrived and attacked at least one police officer with a punch. Police officers overpowered the brother, who insulted and threatened them. The case is being investigated for assaulting police officers, threatening, insulting and causing grievous bodily harm.

The mass brawl at the school in Berlin-Neukölln has raised concerns about criminality among children in Germany. The principal, a dedicated teacher, was injured trying to halt the fight. The police operation involved several patrol cars to maintain order and ensure the safety of those involved. Unfortunately, one of the students' brothers escalated the situation further by attacking a police officer. The incident has highlighted the need for additional support and resources in schools, particularly in areas like newkölln, to address issues of conflict and aggression.
