Terrorism - Police officer in Italy died - Berlin attacker
In his young age of 35, Italian policeman Luca Scata passed away. He confronted the Islamist terrorist responsible for the Berlin Christmas market attack at the Gedächtniskirche in 2016. The police officer succumbed to the consequences of a cancer illness, as the community of Sesto San Giovanni announced.
The terrorist is said to have traveled to Italy by train in 2016. In the city north of Milan, Scata was on patrol with another policeman the day before Christmas Eve. They noticed a suspicious man, who pulled out his pistol during ID control and was shot in the ensuing gunfight. Scata, who was still on probation at the time, received a gold medal from the Italian state for civil bravery.
Mayor Roberto Di Stefano paid tribute to the deceased policeman once again for his great courage. His death left a huge void. The Islamist Anis Amri rammed a truck into a crowd on Breitscheidplatz on December 19, 2016, during the Christmas market attack. Thirteen people lost their lives, and dozens were injured. According to the terrorist organization Islamic State, the attacker acted on their behalf.
The terrorist's journey to Italy continued, potentially passing through the city of Sesto San Giovanni. The incident at Berlin's Broadway Square, where Amri carried out the brutal attack, was contrastingly different from the peaceful situation Luca Scata encountered in a city near Milan, where he showed bravery during a confrontation. Despite being on probation, Scata's bravery earned him recognition from the Italian state with a gold medal for civil bravery.
