In Jerusalem, two Palestinians shoot at people at a bus stop. A lawyer wants to help and gets out of his car armed. An Israeli soldier mistakes him for another assassin and shoots him dead. Relatives of the dead man now make serious accusations against the soldier.
Israel is investigating the death of an Israeli civilian who was allegedly shot by a soldier during a Palestinian attack in Jerusalem. The army announced that the incident on Thursday was being investigated by the police, intelligence service and military police. According to media reports, the armed civilian had shot at two Palestinians who had opened fire on people waiting at a bus stop in Jerusalem. He had stopped his car on the other side of the road after the first shots were fired by the attackers and ran across the street. According to initial reports, two soldiers were also involved in the incident and shot at the Palestinians.
At least one of them apparently mistook the civilian for a third attacker. However, video footage of the incident on social media showed the lawyer holding his hands up before he was hit. According to eyewitnesses, he had also thrown away his weapon, shouted in Hebrew that his identity card should be checked and opened his shirt to show that he was not wearing an explosive belt. One of the soldiers fired anyway. The civilian was hit in the jaw by a bullet and was no longer able to speak. Further shots were then fired at him.
According to media reports, the man succumbed to his serious injuries in hospital one day before his 38th birthday. His brother told the news website ynet on Sunday that he had been "executed". According to the Jerusalem Post, his father called for the soldier to be sentenced.
Following the Hamas massacre in Israel on October 7, the country's strict gun laws were relaxed. As a result, according to media reports, more armed civilians are on the move. Following the fatal incident, however, these instructions have come under fire.
