Pittsburgh Steelers' head coach Mike Tomlin renews contract for a three-year period.
Coach Mike Tomlin first became the face of an NFL team in 2007 when the Steelers hired him. Now, he's about to kick off his 18th season as the Pittsburgh boss. Excitedly, Tomlin said, "I'm thrilled with this contract extension and want to thank Art Rooney II for his support through my first 17 seasons here. We have our sights set on returning to our winning ways, with the aim of clinching the seventh Lombardi trophy."
Tomlin's clutch of coaching prowess is evident through his unyielding run of consistency. Not once has he allowed his teams to slip into a losing season in his 17 years with the Steelers. An impressive 173 regular season wins are under his belt, just two fewer than Andy Reid, the current boss of the Kansas City Chiefs. He's led the Steelers to the playoffs 11 times, notching up a Super Bowl win in 2008, which made him the youngest coach in history to achieve this – until Sean McVay's win with the Los Angeles Rams in 2022.
Tomlin is the third head coach in the last 55 years for the Steelers – Chuck Noll led the team until 1991 and then Bill Cowher took over in 1992. Both men went on to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. Rooney expressed his trust in Tomlin by saying, "We're confident in Mike's leadership and commitment to the Steelers, which has played a significant role in our success in his first 17 seasons as head coach. Extending his contract for three more years is a testament to that."
In the previous year, Pittsburgh battled through turbulent times, reaching the third place in the AFC North division. They endured a quarterback merry-go-round, with Kenny Pickett, Mitch Trubisky, and Mason Rudolph each taking turns as starter. However, they managed to make a playoff appearance with a 10-7 record, only to lose in the Wild Card round to Buffalo Bills.
For his 18th season, MVP quarterback Russell Wilson has joined the Steelers after his departure from the Denver Broncos. Another quarterback, Justin Fields, was traded to the team from the Chicago Bears. So at least, they've got some good help in the QB room to build on their previous success.
