Art museums - Paris Landscape Architects shape Munich Art District

Landscape architects from Paris are set to redesign Munich's Art District around central museums such as the Pinakothekas or the Glyptothek at the Königsplatz. The jury unanimously voted for Atelier Roberta and its idea of an Art Garden in a ideas competition organized by the city and the Free State of Bavaria. According to Art Minister Markus Blume (CSU) during the presentation of the awarded ideas, which will be on display at the Technische Universitaet (TUM) until July 31.

Art, Science and Climate

Munich City Architect Elisabeth Merk highlighted the concern of the winners, taking into account the climate in the city. Their work focuses on improving the living conditions. In fact, the protection of green spaces plays a crucial role in the concept. The plan is to protect and expand these areas to counteract the further increase in temperatures in the city. The goal is an ecologically diverse park, as stated in the design, which also includes an orchard for snacking and insect-friendly plants. Seating areas and shady spots are intended to invite relaxation.

In the Art District, on a surface area of approximately 2.5 square kilometers, besides the Pinakothekas, there are also famous houses such as the Museum Brandhorst, the Stadtkunsthalle im Lenbachhaus, or the Staatliches Museum Agyptischer Kunst. In addition, more than 20 galleries, the Academy of Fine Arts, the NS Documentation Center, and university institutions can be found here. The area is intended to grow even stronger and be perceived as a unity.
