Para-athlete kills bride and four guests at his wedding

Thai para-athlete Chaturong S. won two silver medals last year. When he celebrates his wedding at the weekend, tragedy strikes. The 29-year-old shoots his bride, four guests and himself. The police believe it was a family dispute.

A Thai para-athlete shot his bride, four other guests and finally himself at his own wedding party. According to the police in the north-eastern province of Nakhon Ratchasima, the incident was apparently triggered by a family dispute. According to the report, 29-year-old Chaturong S. shot his 44-year-old bride as well as her mother and sister. One of the two other victims, a guest, was hit by a ricochet.

"They had an argument and Chaturong went to his car, got a gun and started shooting," explained police officer Matichon Wongbaokul. According to the Bangkok Post, the couple had been living together for three years before deciding to get married. During the ceremony, however, Chaturong is said not to have looked happy, as guests later reported in the newspaper.

The BBC reported, citing the police, that Chaturong was "quite drunk" during the crime. Local media reports that Chaturong was unsure because of the large age difference of 15 years between him and his wife were described by the investigators as speculation.

Chaturong had won two silver medals as a swimmer at the Asean Para Games last year. According to the local media, he had lost his right leg as a soldier in the Thai army during a border patrol. Gun violence is widespread in Thailand, where weapons are readily available both legally and illegally. However, gun attacks with multiple victims are rather rare.
