Green Hydrogen - Order for EWE-Hydrogen plant goes to Siemens Energy
The regional energy supplier EWE is pushing forward with the construction of its planned large-scale hydrogen production facility in Emden. Siemens Energy has now been awarded the contract for the delivery of a 280-Megawatt electrolysis plant, which will be the core of the planned facility, as both companies announced. The plant is expected to go into operation in 2027 and then supply up to 26,000 tons of green hydrogen per year for various industrial applications in the region. With further components, the capacity is planned to reach 320 Megawatts.
"This project is an important building block for the ramp-up of the green hydrogen industry in Germany," says Anne-Laure de Chammard, member of the Managing Board of Siemens Energy. "By choosing a location in northwestern Germany and selecting Siemens Energy for this project, we are contributing both regionally and nationally to value creation," says the EWE Chairman of the Board, Stefan Dohler.
EWE announced the construction of the plant at the end of 2022. The investment amount was reportedly around half a billion Euros at the time. The Federal Government and the State are participating in the investment. The corresponding funding decision was handed over in mid-July. "With the long-awaited funding commitments from the Federal Government, the last piece of the puzzle has been put in place to realize strategically important projects like this on a large scale," Chammard said. "The immediate contract signing with EWE shows that industry is now ready to implement these large-scale projects swiftly." Neither company made any statements on the height of the funding.
The green hydrogen produced in Emden is intended to be used in industry and heavy transport. An intentional agreement for the supply of the steelworks in Bremen with ArcelorMittal has already been signed. Green hydrogen is intended to help the steel industry make production CO2-neutral.
- Siemens Energy, a key player in the industry, has been chosen by EWE to supply a 280-Megawatt electrolysis plant for their hydrogen production facility in Emden, Germany.
- Located in Lower Saxony, the Emden facility, once operational in 2027, will produce up to 26,000 tons of green hydrogen annually, contributing significantly to various industrial applications in the region.
- With the Federal Government and the State participating in the investment, Siemens Energy's member of the Managing Board, Anne-Laure de Chammard, noted that the funding commitments are crucial for large-scale projects like this to become a reality.
- In addition to supplying ArcelorMittal's steelworks in Bremen, the green hydrogen produced in Emden is expected to contribute to making heavy transport and various industrial processes in Germany more environmentally friendly.
