tourist traffic - Operation at BER Airport is running normally after IT disruption
After the major IT disruption on Friday, the operation at Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) in Schoenefeld is running mostly normally again. A spokesperson for the airport told dpa that the departing machines are mostly on schedule, except for a few minor delays. Only two arrivals from New York and Newark were canceled by airlines due to reported issues in the US.
The situation at the BER terminals is calm and relaxed, according to the spokesperson. The airport is expected to welcome approximately 70,000 passengers on Saturday. This passenger volume does not reach the level of peak days, even though it is the first holiday weekend in Berlin and Brandenburg.
A faulty software update caused worldwide disruptions on Friday morning, affecting transportation, supermarkets, banks, hospitals, television broadcasters, and other institutions. The software vendor, Crowdstrike, attributed the issue to a faulty update of an IT security system. The company announced the error had been fixed by Friday afternoon.
However, airlines, like many others, faced issues at BER all day. According to the airport spokesperson, 150 of the 552 scheduled flights were canceled - these were departures and arrivals. Thousands of passengers had to wait at the airport or were accommodated in hotels, while others were rebooked. 19 planes took off in the night to Saturday, as airlines requested and obtained an exception from the night flight ban between midnight and 5:00 AM from the aviation authority.
