Doctors - One in seven doctors in MV is from abroad
Every seventh doctor in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is from abroad. Out of the 8611 doctors and doctors in the region, 1191 do not have a German passport, according to the response of the regional government to a small inquiry by AfD state parliamentarian Thomas de Jesus Fernandes. This represents 13.8%. Nationwide, out of the 428,000 doctors and doctors, approximately 64,000 are foreigners - an proportion of 14.9%.
The number of approvals for doctors who have completed their training abroad has increased. In MV, 505 such state approvals were issued last year, compared to 435 in 2017 - an increase of 16%.
Federal Health Minister Karl Lauterbach (SPD) acknowledged at the doctor's conference in May that, for years, too few female and male doctors have been trained in Germany. Instead, Germany has been recruiting more foreign medical professionals to the country.
In light of the increasing number of approvals for doctors trained abroad, Schwerin saw 505 such approvals in 2021, marking a significant increase from 435 in 2017. This shift in policy has been criticized by some, including the Alternative for Germany (AfD) in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, who raise concerns about the impact on local healthcare services.
