Assessment by UEFA - Olympiastadion recognised for quality of the grass

The grass of Berlin Olympiastadion provided the best subsurface during the Football European Championship. The playing field, cultivated in Lower Austria, received a rating of five out of a total of five stars from the European Football Union (Uefa), as the managing company announced. Since its introduction, this was the only time the full evaluation point score was achieved.

"Our entire team worked hard for the preparation and execution of the tournament. The six Berlin matches, including the final, demanded more than we expected. This recognition is a visible reward for all our efforts in all our departments," said Timo Rohwedder, managing director of Olympiastadion Berlin GmbH.

Evaluation based on three major criteria

During the tournament, so-called grass consultants were deployed in all ten stadiums, who assisted in the preparation and repair of the grass. The subsurface was evaluated in three major categories: play quality, physical quality, and grass quality. In addition to a safe subsurface for the players, the optics and overall impression also counted.

The Olympic Stadium in Berlin, renowned for its lawn, served as the primary venue for the soccer European championship. The lush lawn, transported from Lower Austria, was praised for its exceptional quality, contributing to the tournament's success. Timo Rohwedder, the managing director of Olympiastadion Berlin GmbH, expressed gratitude for the venue's five-star rating, awarded by UEFA during the EM evaluation. Despite the demanding six soccer matches held in Berlin, including the final, the venue successfully met the high standards in all three categories: play quality, physical quality, and grass quality.
