Offenburg suspect used old Beretta in crime
According to dpa information, the firearm used by the suspected 15-year-old shooter at the Offenburg school was an old Beretta 765. It is not yet known whether the weapon was in lawful possession or whether there was a violation of the War Weapons Control Act. The newspaper "Bild" reported that it was an heirloom of the grandfather.
As the investigators announced on Friday, the handgun of the suspected gunman probably came from his personal environment. This also applies to the ammunition. According to additional dpa information, the teenager probably got hold of the weapon at home.
According to investigators, the 15-year-old suspect had shot a classmate of the same age twice at a special education school in Offenburg, Baden, on Thursday. The victim succumbed to his injuries shortly afterwards. The German suspect was remanded in custody on suspicion of manslaughter.
Despite the weapon being an heirloom, its possession by the suspect might still be considered a violation of the laws related to war weapons. Following the incident at the school, there have been calls for stricter gun laws in schools to prevent such crimes.
