traffic - No traffic chaos at the start of the weekend in North Rhine-Westphalia
For a kick-off to the weekend, the major traffic chaos on the roads in NRW initially remained contained. "Not all of NRW is sinking into traffic jams on Friday afternoon," said an ADAC Nordrhein spokesperson to the German Press Agency. "We have experienced worse Fridays in NRW. We have not yet reached the 300-kilometer traffic jam mark. It's therefore not much different than on a normal Friday with commuter traffic."
However, there are indeed local "traffic jam hotspots," including on the A3 between Duisburg and Oberhausen, the A40 between Duisburg and Essen, and the A1 from Dortmund towards Cologne. At noon, the ADAC counted 75 traffic jam kilometers on the roads in NRW, at 1 p.m. it was 159 kilometers, at 2 p.m. 214 kilometers. An hour later, the traffic jam length was 287 kilometers, and by 4 p.m. it was already slightly decreasing to 271 kilometers.
Worst Traffic Weekend Expected
The ADAC expects "the worst traffic weekend of the season" nationwide, as Europe's largest traffic club announced. Since all 16 federal states are now on school holidays, there is a lot of through traffic, such as holidaymakers heading towards the Netherlands. "We assume that it will be fuller than usual on Saturdays and Sundays," said the ADAC spokesperson. "In addition, closed sections of the A1 at Leverkusen, the A43 at Herne, and the A3 at Duisburg will complicate route planning."
"The closures on the weekend will worsen the situation, as the alternate routes will also be congested," the spokesperson continued. However, travelers are not only facing long traffic jams on the autobahns towards the coast but also elsewhere in Germany. "No matter where you are in Germany, you will feel that everyone is on holiday. However, we are not expecting a total traffic chaos," the spokesperson added. The traffic expert recommends: "Whoever is flexible and does not have to travel urgently on the weekend, they travel better during the week outside of rush hours, for example on Tuesdays."
