Tourism - New seawalls are taking shape at the Lübeck Bay
In several seaside resorts of the Lübeck Bay, new Seawalls are currently being built. They were supposed to have been finished months ago, but there were always delays. The seawall in Timmendorfer Strand will be released on September 20, and in Haffkrug (both in Ostholstein district) on September 28. However, there is still no date for the Flaneur-Steg in Scharbeutz (also in Ostholstein district), said Julia Prange from Ostsee-Holstein-Tourism.
The 427 meter long bridge from Timmendorfer Strand is supposed to lead over the Baltic Sea in a wide arc, as stated on the commune's website. Originally, the bridge was supposed to be opened to the public on May 24. Stormy weather and a resulting accident - an working platform had come loose and rammed the bridge - had delayed the opening of the new construction, which cost around 11.8 million Euros.
Bridge in Haffkrug shortly before completion
The 230 meter long seawall in Haffkrug is also nearing completion. The bridge in a zigzag shape features an overcovered tribune to make events weather-independent. The construction is reportedly expected to cost around 17.8 million Euros. However, a definite date for the release of the seawall in Scharbeutz in the Ostholstein district has not been set yet, said the press spokeswoman of the Tourism Agency Lübecker Bay, Doris Wilmer-Huperz.
The seawall in Hohwacht in the Plön district is currently closed due to repair work. "It is expected to be reopened in September or October," said Prange. The 80 meter long pier is also popular as a venue for religious services, baptisms, and weddings.
