C. D. Friedrich - MV Festivals honor painter C. D. Friedrich with premiere
The Festspiele of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern set the musical highlight in Caspar-David-Friedrich-Jubilee Year. On Friday, the Concert Poem "Eismeer" in Greifswald, the birthplace of the Romantic painter, will have its world premiere. Composer Christian Jost was inspired by the painting "The Sea of Ice" for the commission from the Festspiele, which is considered one of the main works in the collection of the Hamburg Art Gallery.
"With his paintings, one gets into a meditative state right away, runs the risk of sinking in it, experiences sublime greatness and deep peace," Jost describes his impressions of encountering the work. Friedrich's birthday is celebrated on September 5 for the 250th time.
The concert in Greifswald will be performed by the Zurich Chamber Orchestra, violinist Daniel Hope, Lukas Boehm on vibraphone, and the Signum Saxophone quartet. Festspiel-Intendantin Ursula Haselbeck reportedly suggested the exceptional orchestration. Hope has been connected to the Festspiele since his first guest appearance about 20 years ago, while the four Signum musicians leave their mark as prize winners in residence for the current season.
The eagerly anticipated world premiere in Greifswald Cathedral St. Nikolai is reportedly sold out by the organizers. However, tickets for the concert repetition on Saturday in the Festspielhalle Ulrichshusen (Mecklenburg Lake District) are still available. The program includes works by Edward Elgar and Peter Tchaikovsky.
The Festival Opening Concert in Wismar featured the Festival Overture "Moonrise by the Sea," inspired by the same-named painting by Friedrich.
The program of the Festspiele MV in this season includes 130 concerts at 92 venues, including churches, castles, workshops, manor houses, and parks. Last year, the Festival Summer counted approximately 65,000 visitors. Once again, the Festspiele MV were among the most popular classical music festivals in Germany.
