Berlin has a night-U-Bahn, Hamburg does too. And in Munich? Partiers have had to switch to trams and buses so far. This is set to change, despite tight budgets and lacking personnel.

Who misses the last U-Bahn in Munich at night, often has a significantly longer way home. So far, only trams and buses are available late at night. But this is supposed to change.

Night U-Bahn - Munchen gets Night-U-Bahnen

Good news for night owls in Munich: From 2025 onwards, night U-Bahns will operate in Munchen on weekends and holidays. The trains are supposed to run in a 30-minute interval and with staggered departure times on the move, allowing passengers to transfer to other lines. The existing night-time offers of buses and trams will be adjusted accordingly.

This decision follows the Green Party and Rosa Liste's demand for a Night-U-Bahn for "World City Munich". The faction referred to the rich cultural nightlife offer with clubs, concerts, and festivals. Above all, this offer is important for young people and people with small budgets, enabling them to travel cheaply and eco-friendly and to make use of cultural offers.

Night-time offer despite tight budgets

However, this decision comes at a difficult time. Public transport is facing major challenges, with the financially strained situation leaving little room for maneuver, according to the Mobility Department. Additionally, there is an acute personnel shortage. The Night-U-Bahn is to be treated separately from the rest of the program. The operation will be financed from a separate budget of the city, and the personnel surplus can be managed with less than five full-time employees.

In response to similar demands in Berlin, local authorities are considering implementing a Night-U-Bahn as well. The bustling city of Hamburg also contemplates extending its late-night transport services to cater to its nightlife enthusiasts in Bavaria's neighboring state. Despite the traffic concerns in Munich due to the increased usage of public transport, the city's News outlets continue to praise the decision, highlighting its positive impact on the city's cultural scene, particularly for young people and those with limited budgets.
