Mount Etna in Sicily spews large quantities of lava
On the Italian Mediterranean island of Sicily, Europe's largest active volcano, Mount Etna, spewed large quantities of glowing lava into the sky on Sunday. In the evening, a thick cloud of lava, magmatic gases and rock stood above the mountain, which is more than 3,300 meters high. According to the Italian Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), the so-called eruption column reached a height of 4.5 kilometers. Explosions were repeatedly seen and heard.
Ash rain also fell on several towns in the vicinity of Mount Etna, such as Milo and Zafferana Etnea. However, there were initially no reports of major damage. Operations at the island's airport in Catania continued. Mount Etna is Europe's largest active volcano. The mountain is around 3350 meters high. However, the exact height is constantly changing due to eruptions and cinder cones.
The eruption of Mount Etna in Sicily disrupted air traffic near its vicinity, but thankfully, the airport in Catania managed to operate normally. Moreover, the awe-inspiring spectacle of Etna's volcanic activity serves as a stark reminder of nature's raw power, attracting tourists from all over the world to view Europe's largest active volcano, etna.
