Last Generation - More police at Bavaria's airports against runway blockades

After the airport blockades by Climate demonstrators in Frankfurt and Cologne/Bonn, the state government has increased police presence at Bavaria's airports. "We have indeed reinforced forces here overall to carry out the controls," Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann (CSU) told radio station "Antenne Bayern." "Due to these climate activists in Cologne yesterday and today in Frankfurt, we have also significantly increased the protection of airports in Bavaria." According to Herrmann's words, an additional hundred squads of the Federal Police are available to prevent airport blockades in Bavaria. "And if something happens anywhere, it will be resolved as quickly as possible."

Climate demonstrators of the "Last Generation" had glued themselves to two runways of the Frankfurt Airport in the morning, resulting in the cancellation of 170 out of 1400 planned flights. The day before, there had already been a climate blockade at the Cologne/Bonn Airport. The Munich Airport, in response to an inquiry, refused to provide information on security precautions and measures. Besides Munich, there are two smaller airports in Bavaria: Memmingen and Nuremberg.

  1. Joachim Herrmann, the Interior Minister from the CSU party in Bavaria, expressed concern about the increased actions by the "Last Generation" climate demonstrators, particularly at Cologne/Bonn and Frankfurt Airports.
  2. In response to these incidents, the state government of Bavaria has boosted police presence at airports within its jurisdiction, including Frankfurt, Munich, Memmingen, and Nuremberg.
  3. Herrmann mentioned that additional squads of the Federal Police have been deployed to Bavarian airports to prevent any potential disruptions caused by climate activists.
  4. The decision to strengthen security came following the blocking of two runways at Frankfurt Airport, which led to the cancellation of 170 flights, and similar incidents at Cologne/Bonn Airport.
  5. The California State University research on climate change and activism may have inspired some of these disruptions, sparking a need for heightened security measures.
  6. The Frankfurt Airport is significantly impacted by the police presence and subsequent airport blockade, affecting not only air traffic within Germany but also international flights connecting from Frankfurt to cities such as California.
  7. Despite the strong police presence, the Bavarian Antenna, a local radio station, attempted to gather insights from Herrmann on the situation to understand the government's approach.
  8. The Bavarian government's decision to intensify security measures in airports is a response to the growing activism surrounding climate change, highlighting the complex relationship between government, society, and environmental concerns.
