travel - More passengers at Hannover airport than last year

In the first half of the year, around 2.2 million air travelers used Hannover-Langenhagen Airport. This is approximately 15% more than at the same time last year, as the airport announced. If no extraordinary events occur, one is expected to reach the planned 5.3 million passengers for the entire year.

This would bring Niedersachsen's largest airport back to the level of the pre-Corona period. In 2019, almost six million passengers used the airport.

Capacity utilization with cargo flights is increasing

The most popular destinations in the first half of the year were the Turkish airports Istanbul and Antalya, the holiday destinations Mallorca and Hurghada, and for domestic flights Munich and Frankfurt. There were no problems with check-in or security checks at the beginning of the summer holidays, the spokesperson said.

The load factor of the new routes to Italy and Malaga, Spain, is meeting expectations, it was reported. Eurowings, a Lufthansa subsidiary, expanded its 2023 opened base at Hannover Airport this year. In the summer, Eurowings operates 17 destinations with it, including the Italian cities Rome, Naples, Catania, and Bergamo.

The airport was also able to expand cargo traffic. In the first half of the year, it recorded a increase of 24%, as the spokesperson announced. This area gained significant importance during the pandemic.

  1. Despite the positive growth in air travelers at Hannover-Langenhagen Airport, the increase in passengers might be temporary as the impact of the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic is still uncertain in Lower Saxony's tourism sector.
  2. The city of Hannover and its Hannover-Langenhagen Airport have been instrumental in helping Eurowings, a Lufthansa subsidiary, to expand its operations, with the airport now serving as a base for 17 domestic and international destinations, including popular spots like Rome and Naples in Italy.
  3. As travel restrictions ease and tourism resumes, Hannover-Langenhagen Airport has seen a significant boost in cargo traffic, with a 24% increase in the first half of the year, making it a vital part of the air transport industry, even beyond traditional passenger flights.
