District administrator throws - Mittelsachsen's Landrat Neubauer steps down

The District Administrator of Mittelsachsen, Dirk Neubauer (non-partisan), has stepped down. In a personal statement on his Social Media channels, he explained the move on Tuesday mainly due to personal harassment and lack of enforcement possibilities. His term would have run until 2029. Neubauer had previously hinted several times that he would not be hanging on to the position.

The trained journalist was elected in 2022 - the only Landrat in Saxony, who does not belong to the CDU or is supported by the Union. His candidacy was supported by SPD, Linke, and Greens.

Neubauer had previously announced his resignation in an MDR article about bureaucratic chaos. In it, he also spoke about growing aggression against politicians. "They only come into danger in this country if they want something. Not if they don't want anything", he said.

Lacking majorities in Parliaments

With his personal security situation, he can cope. "What I can't cope with is that I don't get majorities in district councils and municipal parliaments for sensible things, only because they are difficult", Neubauer said. He believes it is more efficient to influence the system from the outside.

Before his work as Landrat, Neubauer had been Burgermeister of the small town Augustusburg since 2013. He had been a member of the SPD for several years, but left before the last federal election. On his Facebook channel, he had already given hints of a new project a few days ago - a consulting firm.

Dirk Neubauer, who served as the Landrat in Saxony, hailed from the SPD party before his tenure. Despite his non-partisan role as District Administrator of Mittelsachsen, his candidacy was supported by parties like SPD, Linke, and Greens, making him the only Landrat in Saxony not affiliated with the CDU or the Union. The town of Freiberg, located in Mittelsachsen, was under his jurisdiction as the Landrat.
