Massive delays expected on highways in the North

Vacation time means traffic jam for travelers. This is particularly the case at the weekend, as all federal states have holidays simultaneously. The ADAC forecast does not spare anything in this regard.

At the weekend, there will once again be a lot of traffic queried by drivers.

Infrastructure - Massive delays expected on highways in the North

Vacation beginning, second wave of travelers, and the first returnees from holidays - concepts that do not bode well for planned road trips according to ADAC. "Motorists can expect one of the worst weekend traffic jams of the season coming up," the automobile club warns. In Hamburg, Schleswig-Holstein, and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, traffic experts anticipate a second wave of travelers. In Lower Saxony and Bremen, many holiday returnees are expected. Additionally, the north is particularly popular as a leisure destination due to its coasts and lakes, which could lead to additional traffic congestion. Furthermore, Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria are also starting their vacations over the weekend, making it the last of the federal states to do so.

The gloomy forecast from ADAC is also based on last year's experience. The last weekend in July in the 2023 travel season was the one with the most traffic jams. In a list of the worst traffic jams, the A7 between Flensburg and Hannover is listed for both directions, as well as the Autobahn network around Hamburg.

The Autobahn GmbH specifically warns of traffic jams on the A1 between Bargteheide Crossing and Buchholzer Dreieck, as well as the A7 between Walsrode Interchange and Hamburg-Nordwest Interchange. The company also lists the A1 between Bremen and Osnabrück as an important north-south route with increased traffic congestion risk due to construction work.

Besides the densely populated areas around Bremen, Hamburg, Hannover, and Osnabrück, ADAC also sees a pinch point on the A7 due to roadwork between Soltau-Ost and Dorfmark, as well as between Garlstorf and Egestorf in both directions. Travelers heading to Kiel, the resorts along the fjord, or to cruise ships and ferries to Scandinavia should also plan for significantly more time.

  1. Despite the upcoming vacation start, ADAC anticipates challenging road trips due to the second wave of travelers and returnees in regions like Schleswig-Holstein, Hamburg, and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
  2. Lower Saxony and Bremen, along with their popular coasts and lakes, are also expected to have a high influx of holiday returnees, potentially leading to increased traffic.
  3. Last year's July weekend was marked by the most significant traffic jams, according to ADAC, with key routes like the A7 between Flensburg and Hannover heavily affected.
  4. Autobahn GmbH specifically warns about congestion on the A1 between Bargteheide Crossing and Buchholzer Dreieck, as well as the A7 between Walsrode Interchange and Hamburg-Nordwest Interchange.
  5. Travelers heading to Kiel or the fjord resorts should account for significantly more travel time due to roadwork on the A7 between Soltau-Ost and Dorfmark, and between Garlstorf and Egestorf.
  6. Construction work on the A1 between Bremen and Osnabrück is also expected to contribute to increased traffic congestion on this important north-south route.
  7. Hannover, Bremen, and other densely populated areas remain pinch points for traffic, alongside the A7 due to roadwork between Soltau-Ost and Dorfmark, and between Garlstorf and Egestorf.
  8. Smart and sustainable travel solutions, such as ADAC's Autodrive technology, may be beneficial for navigating the traffic wave that is expected during this weekend journey.
