Mass brawl at Neukölln school

At a school in Neukölln, an initially trivial dispute between teenagers escalates. 49 pupils and teachers are injured. The principal even has to go to hospital with a broken hand.

Many people were injured in a mass brawl between pupils, teachers and police officers at a school in Berlin-Neukölln. The 52-year-old principal, who tried to separate the brawling youths, was pushed and broke her hand, according to the police. Other teachers and police officers were also attacked. Pupils also sprayed pepper spray, so that a total of 49 children, young people and teachers suffered injuries and were treated by paramedics.

According to the police, the reason for the escalated conflict is said to have been rather banal, it was not about politics. At around 10.30 a.m., a fight broke out at the school between two 14-year-old pupils and a 15-year-old pupil on one side and two other boys on the other. One pupil sprayed irritant gas, but ran into the gas cloud himself, an opponent got hold of the spray and attacked the other group with it. Another 15-year-old joined in and the brawl escalated. Two teachers who intervened were also sprayed. The principal was so injured that she was later taken to hospital.

Several alerted police officers calmed the situation somewhat, but were then attacked by a 21-year-old brother of a pupil with a punch. Police officers overpowered the brother. He went on to insult and threaten the police officers. The two police officers who were attacked complained of pain but were able to continue their duties. The arrested man was taken into police custody, which he was allowed to leave after police measures were completed. He now faces charges of assaulting law enforcement officers, threatening and insulting.

Several preliminary proceedings were initiated for dangerous and simple assault. All those involved were handed over to their legal guardians after their personal details had been established. The investigations are ongoing.
