Criminality - Man at Ammersee killed - still searching for motive
The lethal stabbing attack on a 74-year-old man in Herrsching at Ammersee presents further puzzles for investigators. They continue to seek a possible motive. "It's a very unusual case," said Michael Graf, Press spokesperson for the Oberbayern Nord Police Headquarters.
The man suspected of the crime in Paris is yet to be extradited to Germany. The 22-year-old Serb is believed to have rung the doorbell of a couple in the Herrsching district of Mühlfeld at around 9:20 pm on July 12 and stabbed the 74-year-old man. The 65-year-old woman escaped to a neighbor's house. Nothing was reported stolen, and there was no known connection between the alleged perpetrator and the victim.
Numerous potential witnesses, including local residents, have been interviewed, reported Graf. Furthermore, tips from the community will be evaluated. In addition, the 30-strong investigation team "Mühlfeld" - named after the district where the victim lived - has more than a terabyte of data at their disposal, which needs to be checked. "We are still busy with the review of video material provided by private individuals and businesses," said Graf.
Arrest not even a week after the crime
A large-scale manhunt with helicopters, dogs, and numerous police officers was unsuccessful following the crime. However, investigators were soon hot on the heels of the suspect - through Austria and Switzerland to France. Agents of the Bavarian Criminal Police Office traced the suspect's trail via Munich, Innsbruck, and Zurich to a village near Paris, where they arrested the man less than a week after the crime on a Thursday morning in an apartment.
Tips from the population, the contents of the backpack of the 22-year-old Serbian found at Ammersee, and video recordings contributed to the successful manhunt, Manfred Frei, Chief of the Criminal Police in Fürstenfeldbruck, reported last week. He added, "An investigation is being conducted for murder."
- The crime scene was located in the Mühlfeld district, a part of Herrsching, which is known for its adjacent Mehl field or Mühlfeld field in Upper Bavaria, Germany.
- The Northern Police Headquarters Oberbayern, based in Germany, is leading the investigation into the stabbing incident at Ammersee.
- The 22-year-old suspect, originally from Serbia, is currently in custody in France, awaiting extradition to Germany to face charges for the crime committed in Herrsching.
- Despite the close proximity to the French border, Bavaria's Criminal Police Office was successful in their manhunt, utilizing tips from locals, footage from private sources, and evidence found at Ammersee to apprehend the suspect in a small village near Paris.
- This case of criminality in Herrsching, Bavaria, has once again brought attention to the need for cooperation between police forces across borders, as the suspect's trail extended from Germany to France.
