The strawberry harvest in North Rhine-Westphalia is expected to be meager this year. According to the IT.NRW Statistical Office, 26,144 tons will be harvested in 2024, which is the smallest strawberry harvest within the last ten years. In the open fields, 13,621 tons of strawberries will be harvested on 1,384 hectares. In greenhouses and under high protective coverings, it is reportedly harvested 12,523 tons, which is slightly less.

Rain sets back open field fruits

The yield of open field fruits is expected to be 26.0% lower than in 2023. However, there is a plus of 26.9% for the berries under protective coverings.

June was heavily rainy. The Chamber of Agriculture NRW had recently reported on a promising start to the season, but then the persistent rain made things difficult for many farmers.

Despite the heavy rain in June, which negatively affected the yield of open field fruits, the strawberry harvest in Düsseldorf, located in North Rhine-Westphalia, is still projected to surpass the greenhouse harvest with 13,621 tons versus 12,523 tons. The reduced overall strawberry harvest in North Rhine-Westphalia in 2024, estimated at 26,144 tons, can be attributed to the unfavorable weather conditions, especially in the open fields. Agriculture in the region continues to provide various foods, including strawberries, despite these challenges.
