After discovering Listeria in a Chicken Sausage branded as Gut&Günstig, with product code 71396010824 and best before date 01.08.2024, Edeka has recalled the item. The affected article, in a 400-gram packaging (two times 200 grams), was mainly sold in Edeka and Marktkauf markets in Lower Saxony and adjacent areas of North Rhine-Westphalia, as well as in Bremen, Saxony-Anhalt, Brandenburg, Berlin, Rhineland-Palatinate and the Saarland. The product was also available in markets in the southern half of Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg and adjacent areas of Hesse.

Eleven federal states affected

According to information on Edeka's website, the affected product was primarily offered in Edeka and Marktkauf markets in Lower Saxony and adjacent areas of North Rhine-Westphalia, as well as in Bremen, Saxony-Anhalt, Brandenburg, Berlin, Rhineland-Palatinate and the Saarland. Additionally, the product was available in markets in the southern half of Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg and adjacent areas of Hesse.

The contamination was detected in samples taken in Baden-Württemberg, according to the Lower Saxony Agriculture and Consumer Protection Ministry. Investigations into the case are ongoing.

Infection can cause serious diseases

The ministry warned against consuming the product. A Listeria infection can lead to severe complications, including blood poisoning and meningitis, particularly for pregnant women, seniors and individuals with weakened immune systems.

In pregnant women, the infection can harm the unborn child even without symptoms. A Listeria infection typically presents with diarrhea and fever within 14 days of exposure.

  2. The Supermarket chain Edeka has issued an urgent recall for the chicken sausage branded as Gut&Günstig.
  3. This health issue has affected various regions across Germany, including Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia, Bremen, Saxony-Anhalt, Brandenburg, Berlin, Rhineland-Palatinate, and the Saarland.
  4. Additionally, the contaminated product was available in markets in the southern half of Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, and adjacent areas of Hesse.
  5. The affected area in Baden-Württemberg is currently under investigation to identify the source of the Listeria contamination.
  6. It's important to note that Lower Saxony Agriculture and Consumer Protection Ministry has warned against consuming the product with the given code and best before date.
  7. The food safety incident has raised concerns among the residents of Hannover, a large city in Lower Saxony.
  8. While the recall has been limited to certain regions, individuals residing in Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, and Hesse should also exercise caution and check their purchases.
  9. The concerned public health authorities in these states are working closely with Edeka to address this health hazard and ensure consumer safety.
