After discovering Listeria in a Chicken Sausage branded as Gut&Günstig, with product code 71396010824 and best before date 01.08.2024, Edeka has recalled the item. The product was also available in markets in the southern half of Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg and adjacent areas of Hesse.
Eleven federal states affected
According to information on Edeka's website, the affected product was primarily offered in Edeka and Marktkauf markets in Lower Saxony and adjacent areas of North Rhine-Westphalia, as well as in Bremen, Saxony-Anhalt, Brandenburg, Berlin, Rhineland-Palatinate and the Saarland. Additionally, the product was available in markets in the southern half of Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg and adjacent areas of Hesse.
The contamination was detected in samples taken in Baden-Württemberg, according to the Lower Saxony Agriculture and Consumer Protection Ministry. Investigations into the case are ongoing.
Infection can cause serious diseases
The ministry warned against consuming the product. A Listeria infection can lead to severe complications, including blood poisoning and meningitis, particularly for pregnant women, seniors and individuals with weakened immune systems.
In pregnant women, the infection can harm the unborn child even without symptoms. A Listeria infection typically presents with diarrhea and fever within 14 days of exposure.
