After disruption in Frankfurt - Leipzig and Dresden airports increase security measures
The airports Leipzig/Halle and Dresden are taking security measures following disruptions at Frankfurt Airport. A spokesperson for Mitteldeutsche Flughafen AG confirmed this in response to an inquiry, stating that due to repeated disruptions at other German airports, the security forces at Leipzig/Halle and Dresden are acting with increased vigilance. The two airports are working closely with the Federal Police.
Activists from the climate protection group Letzte Generation had glued themselves to the Frankfurt Airport in the morning, causing the airport to temporarily halt flights. Flights were also cancelled in Hamburg due to the disruption. On Wednesday, activists had disrupted flights for approximately three hours at Cologne/Bonn Airport.
- In an effort to prevent any similar incidents, Saxony-Anhalt and Saxony airports, including Leipzig/Halle and Dresden, have implemented stricter security measures.
- The climate group Letzte Generation, whose activities have caused disturbances at Frankfurt, Hamburg, and Cologne/Bonn airports, has not indicated any plans for demonstrations at Leipzig or Dresden Airports.
- The increased vigilance at Leipzig/Halle and Dresden Airports is seen as a response to the recent climate demonstrations and their impact on air traffic in other parts of Germany.
- Frankfurt Airport, despite being the epicenter of recent climate protests, maintains a strong security presence to ensure minimal disruptions to air traffic.
- In contrast to Frankfurt, where climate activists have staged demonstrations and caused disturbances, Leipzig/Halle and Dresden Airports have remained incident-free, thanks to their robust security measures.
- Activists from Letzte Generation have not yet announced any plans for a demonstration at the future International Airport in Leipzig, which is scheduled to open in 2027, raising questions about their potential targets in the near future.
