weather - Large damages after bad weather at the beginning of holidays in Brandenburg

At the very first weekend of the holidays, a thunderstorm caused partial damage in Brandenburg. In some places south of Berlin, the fire department had to be called out dozens of times to pump out basements and clear fallen trees.

Approximately 50 weather-related incidents occurred around the city of Zossen (Teltow-Flaming district), according to a spokesperson for the regional control center. In the Wuensdorf district, the roof of a library was blown off. The situation was also hectic in the Mittenwalde area (Dahme-Spreewald district), a spokesperson for the fire department reported. However, there were reportedly no injuries. In other parts of the state, the weather was calmer.

Flight operations at BER temporarily halted

The main airport was closed for a quarter of an hour on Sunday evening due to a thunderstorm warning. "But it was quickly rectified and had no major consequences," a BER spokesperson said. It was a regular interruption, as is common with thunderstorms. In June and July of this year, there had been above-average thunderstorms in the region.

However, significant disruptions and a longer halt in flight operations occurred at the main airport on Friday due to a large IT failure. The cause was a faulty software update that triggered widespread disruptions worldwide, nearly paralyzing the flight traffic in many places. Supermarkets, banks, hospitals, television broadcasters, and other facilities were also affected.

  1. Despite the vacation starting, the weather in Wünsdorf during this period was unpredictable, leading to some concerns.
  2. The thunderstorm that started the holidays in Brandenburg also resulted in upended trees in and around the city of Zossen.
  3. The weather-related incidents in Zossen, located in the Teltow-Fläming District, disrupted traffic significantly, causing delays and inconvenience.
  4. The main airport in Berlin, BER, had a brief closure on Sunday evening due to another thunderstorm warning, but operations resumed shortly after.
  5. Unfortunately, a large IT failure at BER on Friday led to major disruptions and a longer halt in flight operations, causing significant inconvenience for travelers.
  6. The Fire Department in Zossen, Brandenburg, was also actively involved in clearing up the aftermath of the storms, ensuring safety and order in the affected areas.
