Criminality - Interior Minister for Ban on Knives in Public Transport
Knives in Public Transportation should be banned, according to Lower Saxony Interior Minister Daniela Behrens' opinion. She made this statement during a visit to the Police Directorate Hannover's training center. "We need a proper legal basis to clearly show that it's not normal to carry a knife", Behrens said. Additionally, the minister stated that weapon-free zones in the federal state should be expanded.
Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) is not leading with her draft for a gun law reform due to FDP's objections. In mid-June, the Bundesrat, at Niedersachsen's initiative, asked the federal government to consider a general ban on pocket knives, as well as a ban on carrying knives with fixed blades longer than six centimeters and further restrictions on carrying weapons specifically in public transportation and train stations.
For the safety of Deutsche Bahn and S-Bahn train stations, the responsibility lies with the railway and the Federal Police. In contrast, for U-Bahns and buses, the responsibility falls on the operators and the respective state police.
- Daniela Behrens, the Interior Minister of Lower Saxony, advocated for a legal basis to prohibit knives in public transport, as she deemed it unusual to carry a knife in such settings.
- During her visit to the Police Directorate Hannover's training center, SPD's Daniela Behrens emphasized the need to expand weapon-free zones in Lower Saxony to ensure inner security.
- Although Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) hasn't yet presented her gun law reform due to opposition from the FDP, Lower Saxony proposed a general ban on pocket knives and longer fixed-blade knives in public transport.
- As U-Bahns and buses aren't under the authority of Deutsche Bahn and the Federal Police, their safety falls under the jurisdiction of the operators and respective state police, unlike S-Bahn and train stations.
