Indictment for paint attack on Brandenburg Gate

In September, Last Generation climate activists smear the Brandenburg Gate with orange paint. The painstaking clean-up is said to have cost more than a hundred thousand euros. This now has legal consequences for the activists.

Following the paint attack on the Brandenburg Gate by climate activists from the Last Generation group, the Berlin public prosecutor's office has charged six men and women. In the charges brought by the Tiergarten district court, they are accused of, among other things, criminal damage to property and resisting law enforcement officers, according to investigators in the German capital.

The Brandenburg Gate had been smeared with paint on September 17th, and the removal is said to have cost more than one hundred thousand euros. A 27-year-old woman is said to have sprayed a pillar of the Brandenburg Gate with a fire extinguisher prepared with non-water-soluble yellow paint on the day of the crime, according to the public prosecutor's office. At the same time, a 34-year-old woman is said to have emptied paint on the ground between the central pillars of the Brandenburg Gate and spread it further with her legs.

The prosecution accuses these two women of joint criminal damage to property. Three other activists - two men aged 26 and 31 and a 27-year-old woman - are alleged to have tried to access the Brandenburg Gate at the same time using a specially rented lifting platform, spread banners from there and also spread paint. This trio, together with another 51-year-old activist who remained on the ground, are accused of criminal damage to property in conjunction with resisting law enforcement officers.

They are said to have tried to prevent two police officers from stopping the driveway with the lifting platform. The 51-year-old is also alleged to have tried to snatch a banner that had already been confiscated from the police officers. A total of 14 proceedings were initiated in connection with the action. Investigations into the other suspects are still ongoing.
