summer weather - Hot day in Southwest - measured up to 33.9 degrees

In Waghäusel-Kirrlach, the temperature reached up to 33.9 degrees today - this was a provisional record according to the German Weather Service (DWD) data: No other place in Germany had been that hot according to the previous data. However, this was not the hottest day in Baden-Württemberg so far. The DWD had considered it possible that the previous record would be surpassed.

Record temperature is 34.8 degrees

The annual record of 34.8 degrees in Baden-Württemberg remains active according to current expectations. It was measured on June 29th at the Obersulm-Willsbach station (Heilbronn district). On July 9th, a record temperature of 34.3 degrees was measured for this month, also at the Waghäusel-Kirrlach station.

A cold front is approaching - thunderstorms possible

With the heat, the risk of thunderstorms increases. "The warm, humid air in Baden-Württemberg will become increasingly unstable in the course of Sunday in the face of an approaching cold front," the DWD announced in the evening. Starting from Sunday afternoon, the thunderstorm risk will increase nationwide. With thunderstorms, there could be heavy rain of up to 25 liters per square meter per hour, as well as hail and wind gusts up to 60 kilometers per hour.

In the evening, thunderstorms are possible from the High Rhine to Upper Swabia and the Swabian Alb to the Frankenhöhe - with rainfall amounts of around 40 liters per square meter. Temperatures decrease slightly with highs of 22 degrees in the mountains and 27 degrees in the north-east.

Despite the record-breaking heat in Waghaëusel-Kirrlach, the highest temperature in recent history for Baden-Württemberg still stands at 34.8 degrees, measured in Obersulm-Willsbach. This exceptional weather continues to pose a risk for thunderstorms in the Southwest of Germany, including regions like High Rhine, Upper Swabia, and the Swabian Alb. According to the DWD, these thunderstorms might bring heavy rainfall up to 25 liters per square meter per hour, hail, and wind gusts reaching 60 kilometers per hour, affecting areas in Baden-Württemberg.
