Hit-and-run in Delmenhorst - driver abroad?
The Delmenhorst police have taken a step forward in the hit-and-run case following a fatal accident: in view of the pressure of the manhunt, one of the occupants of the car involved in the accident has turned himself in. However, the suspected driver may have absconded.
Just over a week after a fatal hit-and-run in Delmenhorst, Lower Saxony, the police have identified three occupants of the vehicle. The 21-year-old suspected driver is on the run, explained the police in Delmenhorst. There were indications that he may have fled abroad. They are searching for him at full speed.
A week ago on Sunday, a pedestrian was run over in Delmenhorst. The occupants then fled in the car. According to the police, witnesses heard a bang, found the man in the street and alerted the emergency services. However, the pedestrian died from his serious injuries. Traces secured by investigators at the scene of the accident allowed more precise conclusions to be drawn about the vehicle, which was an SUV. A woman from Delmenhorst was identified as the owner.
Presumably as a result of the numerous tips and the increasing pressure to trace the vehicle, the 21-year-old son of the owner, accompanied by a lawyer, contacted the police last Wednesday and stated that he had been in the vehicle together with a 20-year-old woman from Delmenhorst. At the time of the accident, however, the SUV was being driven by a 21-year-old acquaintance from Delmenhorst.
The car involved in the accident was found on a former factory site on Thursday. The investigators must now verify the previous descriptions of the course of the accident on the basis of objective evidence. In addition, it must be clarified to what extent other people in the vehicle may have been criminally liable. The speed at the time of the accident is also still being investigated. The work of an expert on this has not yet been completed.
The hit-and-run incident in Delmenhorst, Lower Saxony, has gained international attention due to the suspected driver's potential escape abroad. The incident, which resulted in a fatal traffic accident, is now being investigated by international law enforcement agencies in collaboration with the local police.
Despite the involvement of Lower Saxony's police in the hit-and-run case, the number of traffic accidents and subsequent deaths in the region continues to be a concern. In an effort to reduce these statistics, the authorities have launched several campaigns to raising traffic safety awareness.
In the wake of the hit-and-run incident, the Lower Saxony police are also increasing their efforts to combat crime in Delmenhorst.
