Haribo plans to establish a chewy candy factory at a cost of 300 million euros.
Haribo's demand for Maoam can't be fulfilled by their current factory in Neuss. To address this issue, the firm plans to construct a bigger production facility. They're estimated to invest 300 million euros in a new factory, located in Neuss, North Rhine-Westphalia. Haribo is in talks with the city about purchasing a 14-hectare plot, which is equivalent to 20 football fields. Construction might start as early as 2025, with production potentially beginning in 2028.
Markus Riegelein, Haribo's operational manager, previously discussed this project with "Handelsblatt." The company, located in Grafschaft, already has another factory in Neuss where they've been making Maoam candies. They aim to shut down this smaller facility after a transition period, which will be replaced by the new, more substantial site. The new factory's production capacity is allegedly double that of the current one.
350 Haribo employees currently work in Neuss, and they're anticipating the addition of around 100 more. The new site will not only manufacture Maoams but also fruit gum.
In 2020, Haribo shut down a 120-employee factory in Saxony and faced backlash. Now, they're set on a big investment for a German industrial site. Despite high wages and energy costs, and complex regulatory requirements, Riegelein mentioned to "Handelsblatt" that these are accepted challenges. "The global situation isn't very stable right now," he added. "Nevertheless, we can still manufacture competitively in Germany."
Haribo's name is derived from "Hans Riegel Bonn." While their headquarters were once in Bonn, the company relocated them to Grafschaft in 2018. They maintain factories in Grafschaft, Neuss, and Solingen. Haribo employs over 7000 people globally, with about 3000 in Germany. They've been part of the Maoam brand since 1986, when they acquired the chewy candy manufacturer Edmund Münster GmbH & Co. KG.

Haribo will produce a wide range of chewy candies at the new factory, including their popular brand, Haribo. Due to the expansion, Haribo's confectionery line, including Haribo products, will see increased production capacity.
