In Hamburg, significant investments are being made in sports facilities. According to Senate answers to several requests from the SPD-Fraktion, around 610 Million Euro were invested in enhancing sports infrastructure from 2011 to 2020. An additional 735 Million Euro are planned to be invested by 2025, leading to the completion or construction of 344 renovation and new building projects at public facilities. In total, investments will amount to over 1.3 Billion Euro.

Furthermore, 181 projects with a volume of approximately 378 Million Euro are already planned by the Senate until 2030, in addition to 480 projects by sports clubs.

"Whether large projects like the new Alsterswimming Hall, modern school sports halls, future-oriented club facilities, or parks in nature: Sports facilities are absolutely shaping for city districts and cityscape," said the sport political spokesperson and deputy chairwoman of the SPD-Fraktion, Juliane Timmermann. "It's a good sign that Hamburg, with the many modernizations, renovations, and new buildings of recent years, has set the right priorities."

Praise for the financial efforts of the clubs

Nationwide, sports infrastructure has been neglected for decades. "The German Olympic Sports Federation (DOSB) estimates the need for renovation nationwide at a minimum of 31 Billion Euro. That's a gigantic sum, which shows that Hamburg, with the many modernizations, renovations, and new buildings of recent years, has set the right priorities."

Timmermann also referred to the significant financial efforts of Hamburg's clubs, "which, with their commitment, contribute to a flourishing sports landscape, from which not only professional sports, but also the amateur and leisure sector benefits."

Sport has an integrative power, is a social bond, and an indispensable part of coexistence in the metropolitan region, she said. "That's why we will also continue to advocate for Hamburg as an Active City with modern sports facilities in the future."
