Firefighters acting as rescuers in Dortmund retrieved a 54-year-old drunk man from a crane at night - he had mistakenly believed himself to be the crane operator and was wearing only underwear. Witnesses called the police tip line around 0:45 am, reporting that someone was sitting in the cab of a crane's control cabin, as the police reported about the incident from Saturday night. It took a two-hour operation by police and firefighters to safely bring the man down from a height of 45 meters.

The police had previously attempted to evacuate the man using loudspeaker announcements. Later, according to the protocol, the man stated that he had mistakenly believed himself to be the crane operator at the construction site, which was enclosed by a construction fence. He was reportedly heavily intoxicated and only wearing underwear.

Then, the high-reach rescue team of the Dortmund Fire Department arrived with a telescopic ladder vehicle. Inside the control cabin, the responding team found alcoholic beverages. The man was taken into police custody. He now awaits an investigative procedure for trespassing, according to the police.
