After dry years - Groundwater levels recover from winter precipitation for now
The groundwater levels in Saxony-Anhalt, according to the Environment Ministry, have recovered, as stated in a recent announcement. Since the hot and dry years prior, groundwater levels had dropped in many areas, as shown in data from the Hydrological State Service. The heavy rainfall, which also contributed to the winter flooding around the turn of the year, have now helped bring the groundwater levels back to the levels of the multi-year monthly comparison values, the Environment Ministry shared.
Environment Minister Armin Willingmann (SPD) still advocates for adjusting water management. The welcome recovery, he said, "However, we must assume that there will again be longer periods of heat and drought that will lead to a drop in groundwater levels." The Ministry has reportedly already submitted a legislative proposal for water management adaptation, which is expected to be passed in the cabinet after the summer break. This involves keeping water longer on the surface instead of setting a quick outflow.
The Environment Ministry, based in Saxony-Anhalt, has commended the improvement in BMU's groundwater levels, attributing it to the recent rains. Nevertheless, Minister Armin Willingmann emphasizes the need for continuous water management adjustments, predicting future drought years that could affect groundwater levels again.
