Mobility - Green bands on simpler fares in public transport

The Green faction in Saxony-Anhalt calls for simplification of fares in public transportation. "We should attempt to bring Sachsen-Anhalt into a transport association, this patchwork is really hindering and complicated. We need simpler fare structures," said Fraktionchairwoman Cornelia Lüddemann to the German Press Agency. From their perspective, the current system for public transportation users without Germanyticket is often too complicated.

In northern Sachsen-Anhalt, there is the Magdeburg Regional Transport Association (Marego) - these are the transportation companies from Magdeburg and the surrounding districts of Börde, Jerichower Land and Salzlandkreis. The Middle German Transport Association (MDV) in the south covers parts of Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia. Anyone who wants to travel longer distances in Saxony-Anhalt needs several tickets. There are cooperations beyond the transport association boundaries, confirmed Marego upon request. However, the tickets sold would only be valid in their own transport association.

The Left demands a rail investment program

The Greens see this as an obstacle for broader use of public transportation and demand a change in transport policy. "We need to shift from a needs-based approach to an offer-based approach. We see that too, our train orders, the buses that run through the country. That's all calculated so that it just covers the demand. But that's not what makes it attractive for people to use these offers additionally," said Lüddemann.

The Left in the state parliament also demands changes. "Everyone is talking about the school bus, which doesn't even exist. It's just the normal bus where the students travel, but there's a reason why everyone is talking about the school bus: It's the only bus that goes back and forth. That's a scheduling that's not very attractive," said Fraktionschairwoman Eva von Angern. "That's why I can understand anyone in rural areas who says: I can't do without my car."

Von Angern also sees deficiencies in rail transportation in Saxony-Anhalt. "In Saxony-Anhalt, 700 kilometers of rail have been dismantled since the fall of the wall. Unbelievable!" A rail investment program from the federal government is needed, "We can't get that as a state alone."
