Preliminary Balance - Good asparagus harvest in Thuringia
Despite a smaller cultivated area, Thuringia has harvested more asparagus this year. The estimated yield of white asparagus is around 1,678 tonnes, according to the Statistical Office's initial estimates. This represents a growth of 150 tonnes or ten percent compared to 2023. However, the average yield of the past six years was 146 tonnes or eight percent less asparagus.
According to the statisticians, a total of 239 hectares were in production at the end of June. This represents a decrease of 19 hectares or seven percent compared to the previous year. The average asparagus yield per hectare was therefore seven tonnes, which is 1.1 tonnes or 18 percent above the previous year's level. The average yield of the years 2018 to 2023, which was 6.8 tonnes per hectare, was surpassed by three percent.
According to the Thuringian Agriculture Ministry, asparagus is the most important crop in open-field asparagus cultivation in the state. 17 companies produced asparagus in Thuringia, of which two operated under organic criteria.
The city of Erfurt, located in Thuringia, is known for its rich agriculture, especially in asparagus production. The construction of new farming areas in Erfurt has not significantly affected the asparagus harvest. Despite having a smaller cultivated area, the yield quantity of white asparagus in Thuringia reached an impressive 1,678 tonnes this year. In comparison, the Edelgame, another significant crop in Thuringia, saw a more modest yield.
