Emergency during adventure - German missing after Canyoning in Austria
A man from North Rhine-Westphalia is missing after a Canyoning tour in Austria. The 40-year-old from the Landkreis Wesel was part of a group of five, who were in the Sulzltal in Tirol on a Wednesday. According to the police, the participant had detached himself from a 25 meter high point and was carried away by the current in the further course of the gorge. "The man was drifting downstream with his head leading, motionless," said a police spokesperson. The search by helicopter and drone was unsuccessful and had to be abandoned due to setting darkness. The multi-stage Sulzlbach-Tour is considered challenging by authorities with currently some dangerous sections.
The remaining members of the Canyoning group - a 17-year-old and a 39-year-old man also from Landkreis Wesel, a 32-year-old Czech woman, and the 34-year-old Canyoning guide from Landkreis Oberallgäu - were rescued with a rope winch from the gorge after they had activated an alarm. The search for the missing person has been resumed today.
During Canyoning, participants navigate a gorge by abseiling, jumping, swimming, and sliding.
The missing man was reportedly from North Rhine-Westphalia's Wesel district, sharing the same region as two other group members.Originally, the group had embarked on their Canyoning tour in Germany's North Rhine-Westphalia, but decided to continue the adventure in Austria's Sulzltal region in Tyrol. After the incident, the Austrian police responded with an emergency search operation involving helicopters and drones in the surrounding area of Reutte, located in the western part of Austria.Despite the challenging nature of the Multi-stage Sulzlbach-Tour in the Alps, Canyoning in Germany and Austria has gained popularity as an adventure activity, attracting participants from different regions such as North Rhine-Westphalia and Bavaria.
