German container ship fired upon in the Red Sea

A container freighter belonging to the German shipping company Hapag-Lloyd has been shot at in the Red Sea. The "Al Jasrah" was damaged, but there were no casualties, according to a spokesperson for the Hamburg-based shipping company. Spiegel, among others, had previously reported on the shelling.

A container ship belonging to the German shipping company Hapag-Lloyd came under fire in the Red Sea on Friday. "There has been an attack on one of our ships," a spokesperson for the shipping company told the AFP news agency. A US Department of Defense official said the freighter had been hit by a projectile fired from a region in Yemen controlled by the Huthi militia.

According to the maritime security company Ambrey, a fire broke out on the ship after the attack north of the port city of Mocha. A container fell into the sea. The Hapag-Lloyd spokesman did not confirm the information about the container to AFP, and there was no corresponding information from the ship itself.

The spokesman said that the ship was on its way from the Greek port of Piraeus to Singapore. There were no casualties in the attack and the ship is now continuing towards its destination.

Since the beginning of the war between Israel and the radical Islamic Hamas, the Houthi militia in Yemen has fired drones and missiles at Israel several times and attacked ships in the Red Sea. The Iran-backed rebels see themselves as part of the self-proclaimed "Axis of Resistance" directed against Israel.
