Big party - Gay-lesbian city festival started
A week before Christopher Street Day, the queer community in Berlin gets into a festive mood. Around Nollendorfplatz in the Schöneberg district, the 30th lesbian-gay city festival started at 11.00 am, as a spokesperson announced. Thousands of visitors are expected there today and tomorrow. The motto is: "Equal Rights for Unequal! Worldwide!" The weather should not get in the way of a big party: The sun shone brightly at the start and it was already nearly 30 degrees.
According to the organizers, a wide range of queer projects, associations, and organizations will provide insight into their work at the festival. Authorities and companies present themselves as open employers. And of course, there will be celebrating and partying, with six stages offering entertainment from early morning to late at night. Restaurants and bars in the Rainbow District are looking forward to guests. The governing mayor of Berlin, Kai Wegner (CDU), is expected at the festival in the early afternoon.
The big parade for the Christopher Street Day (CSD) then takes place on July 27. As in previous years, the organizers expect hundreds of thousands. The CSD in Berlin is considered one of the largest events for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, and queer (LGBTQI) community in Europe.
Queer refers to non-heterosexual people or people who do not identify with the traditional roles of man and woman or other societal norms around gender and sexuality.
