Air transport - Flights to Hamburg cancelled due to climate protest in Frankfurt
The prolonged blockade of climate activists at Frankfurt Airport affected flights in Hamburg. In the morning, four arrivals to and two departures for Frankfurt am Main were cancelled due to the action, according to the Hamburg Airport's internet portal. By noon, Lufthansa flights were scheduled to take off and land as usual.
Early in the morning, several people had entered the Frankfurt am Main airport grounds and glued themselves to the runways. The activists of "The Last Generation" reportedly wanted to protest for a faster exit from fossil energies. Climate activists had already paralyzed air traffic at Cologne/Bonn Airport for about three hours on a Wednesday.
The climatic issue leading to protests extended beyond Frankfurt am Main, impacting flights at Hamburg's airport as well. The blockade at Frankfurt Airport, led by "The Last Generation", resulted in the cancellation of several flights in the morning. The protest at Frankfurt am Main airport's runways aimed to advocate for a quick transition away from fossil fuels. Air traffic disruptions due to climate demonstrations were not an unfamiliar occurrence, as evident from the previous three-hour blockade at Cologne/Bonn Airport.
