Flight operations in Munich resumed
It may still be winter in Bavaria, but the snow clearing services now have the situation under control. Flight operations have been running again since the early morning, only the railroads are still experiencing delays.
Munich Airport resumed flight operations at 06:00. However, there will still be restrictions on air traffic, the company announced on its website this morning. Flight operations were temporarily suspended on Saturday due to the severe onset of winter in Bavaria.
The situation on the roads in southern Bavaria has also calmed down despite the continuing wintry weather during the night. The authorities only reported minor accidents; there were no serious injuries or fatalities. "A few trees still fell, but there were only accidents with minor damage", said a spokesperson for the Upper Bavaria South Police Headquarters. In Lower Bavaria, accidents were also "typical for the time of year", according to a spokesperson. The night was similarly quiet on the roads in northern Upper Bavaria and Swabia, according to the respective police headquarters.
Despite the more relaxed traffic situation in Bavaria, there were still no trains running at Munich Central Station early on Sunday morning. A spokesman said during the night that Deutsche Bahn would announce in the morning when services would resume.
It remains cold
Further fresh snow is not expected in large parts of Bavaria on Sunday. According to the German Weather Service, only isolated flakes are expected to fall. Only in the eastern low mountain ranges and in the Alps are several centimetres of fresh snow expected. There are also snow drifts or a considerable risk of avalanches in the ridges. Meteorologists are expecting lows of minus 6 to minus 9 degrees. South of the Danube, temperatures could reach minus 10 to minus 15 degrees in some areas.
It will remain cold on Monday and Tuesday, but snow is only expected to fall sporadically. The situation will be similar in some parts of Germany in the coming days. In Lower Saxony, on the North Sea coast and between the Ore Mountains and the Harz Mountains, some snowfall is expected on Sunday. On Monday, the flakes should slowly turn into raindrops. In contrast, it should remain dry from Berlin to southern Bavaria.
Rain is also expected to continue in the west and southwest on Tuesday. The weather service is also expecting black ice here. On Saturday, the winter weather paralyzed parts of Bavaria. Snow and black ice caused accidents and long traffic jams on the highways, and Munich and Memmingen airports temporarily suspended flight operations. There were no trains on numerous rail routes and travelers had to spend the night in trains in Ulm and Munich on Saturday night. The Bundesliga home match between FC Bayern Munich and 1. FC Union Berlin on Saturday afternoon was also canceled.
