Lower Franconia - Fire in the former Grafenrheinfeld Nuclear Power Plant
In the Unterfranken former Atom power plant Grafenrheinfeld, there was a fire this morning. The police reported that there was no danger for the population. The fire in the idled reactor has been extinguished. According to the police, the cause of the fire was a technical defect.
Besides the plant fire department, firefighters from the surrounding area were also involved. The volunteer fire department Grafenrheinfeld reported that the fire broke out at a ventilation system. Radiation had not leaked outside.
The nuclear power plant in the Schweinfurt district was decommissioned in 2015 as part of Germany's exit from nuclear energy. The dismantling began in 2018. The two cooling towers are supposed to be blown up in August.
The fire at the Grafenrheinfeld nuclear power plant in Bavaria's Upper Franconia region was initially believed to be a serious concern, but the Energy authority confirmed that it was contained to the idled Atomic Energy facility. The local Police, along with firefighters from the plant and surrounding areas, worked diligently to extinguish the fire, which originated from a technical defect within the ventilation system.
