Fire department: Dog smells gas and warns of cellar fire

According to the fire department, a dog warned a couple still asleep of a gas leak in Olsberg, Sauerland. The owner of the animal woke up on Friday morning because it had become restless, according to the fire department. Exhaust fumes and smoke were coming from an apparently defective oil heater in the cellar of the vacation home. There was no open fire.

The fire department reportedly arrived with 55 firefighters and 10 vehicles, in addition to the police and emergency services. By the time they arrived, all eight vacation guests from Dortmund had already left the house, including a two-month-old baby. The 57-year-old dog owner was taken to hospital with suspected smoke inhalation.

During the emergency, the family's pet dog continuously barked, sensing the gas leak and potential fire. In such situations, animals often serve as valuable early warning systems.
