Criminality - Fire at planned asylum accommodation: Police Leipzig investigating
The Police in Leipzig are investigating arson at a planned communal accommodation for asylum seekers. A vigilant citizen reportedly alerted the police after noticing a wooden pallet on fire on the wall of the building in the Thekla district. The flames threatened to engulf the entire complex. According to the police, the officers were able to extinguish the fire with the fire extinguisher from their patrol car and prevent further damage.
The police also found graffiti with constitutionally-contrary symbols and statements against refugees on several building sections. Traces on the scene led the police to a nearby apartment, which they searched. The police are now investigating a 24-year-old for serious arson, use of symbols of unconstitutional organizations, incitement to hatred, and property damage.
The arson incident occurred in a planned asylum accommodation in Saxony's Leipzig city. The community dwelling was intended to provide shelter for refugees and asylum seekers. The brand new fire at the building was a cause for concern in the local migration community. The Brand Foundation, a local organization, has expressed concern over the incident and called for increased security measures at asylum accommodation in Leipzig. The investigating police have linked the arson to a suspect living in a nearby apartment.
